Apple Inc has warned the US trade representative that tariffs on its products would create a great impact and hurt apple’s contribution to U.S. economy.
The bigger news is , there were lots of speculations whether Apple would move its production units from china but apple went ahead and will now be moving its Mac Pro assembling unit from US to china.
It it to be noted that the $6,000 desktop computer had been the company’s only major device assembled in the U.S.
In a letter dated June 17 , Apple said impact of United states proposed tariffs “would result in a reduction of Apple’s economic contribution.”
Apple also made it clear that the tariffs “would also weigh on Apple’s global competitiveness” because Chinese companies Apple competes with would not be subject to the tariffs.
Apple also confirmed that Mac pro is designed and engineered in U.S. and will U.S.-made components.
Apple has partnered with Quanta Computer in China and will have its production unit in Shanghai closer to Apple’s other factories.
According to apple, moving the unit from US to china would help them reduce costs related to shipping components to US for the last production step.
Trump has always pressured Apple to make some iPhones, Macs or iPads in the U.S. since the 2016 presidential campaign.
“I said you know, Tim, unless you start building your plants in this country, I won’t consider my administration an economic success,”– Trump said.
